Travel insurance is one of those things nobody thinks about until they need it - and by then, it's too late to shop around. Here's how to compare policies and choose coverage that actually protects you.
Not all travel insurance plans cover the same things. Medical emergencies, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and flight delays are often sold as separate add-ons rather than bundled together, so it's worth reading the policy summary carefully before assuming you're covered.
Pay close attention to exclusions - many standard policies don't cover pre-existing medical conditions, extreme sports, or travel to certain regions unless you specifically request additional coverage.

A domestic weekend trip has very different risk factors than a multi-country international itinerary. If you're traveling somewhere with limited access to quality healthcare, prioritize plans with strong emergency medical and evacuation coverage.
For Umrah and Hajj travelers specifically, look for policies designed around large group movements and extended stays, since standard tourist plans don't always account for these conditions.

A policy is only as good as its claims process. Look for insurers with 24/7 support lines and a straightforward digital claims system - the last thing you want mid-trip is to be stuck on hold trying to file paperwork.
Read a few reviews focused specifically on claims experience, not just price. A cheaper policy that's difficult to claim against often costs more in the end.

The lowest-priced policy on the list isn't always the best deal. Compare coverage limits side by side: a plan that's $20 cheaper but caps medical coverage at a fraction of another plan's limit isn't actually saving you money.
Look at the deductible too. A low premium with a high deductible can end up costing more out of pocket than a slightly pricier plan with better terms.
Some benefits - like trip cancellation coverage - only apply if you purchase your policy within a certain window after booking your trip, often 14 to 21 days. Waiting until the week before departure can mean missing out on your strongest protections.
Buying early also gives you time to review the policy fully and ask questions, rather than rushing through fine print at the airport.

Sorting through policy documents from multiple insurers takes time most travelers don't have. A travel advisor familiar with insurance products can quickly narrow down options that actually fit your itinerary.
At Amanigo Travels, we help clients compare coverage options as part of the booking process, so insurance decisions are informed rather than rushed.
